A nomination with a difference….

Victoire Press Woodland Trust Tree of the year blogWe’re often inspired by the work of the Woodland Trust, and their latest newsletter is no exception. The nominations are now open to find – the UK Tree of the Year!

Each year, the Woodland Trust invites people to nominate a tree anywhere in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. It might be one with particular sentimental significance, one that’s especially beautiful or one with an interesting history. Whatever your inspiration, nominations are only open until 29th July so get your skates on and get nominating!

A panel of judges will assess the nominations and the overall winner will go on to represent the UK in the 2017 European Tree of the Year competition, sponsored by the Environmental Partnership Association. But that’s not all; the winning tree also receives a £1000 “Tree-LC Pamper Package”, with all shortlisted trees receiving over 1000 votes getting a £500 package, all thanks to player support from the People’s Postcode Lottery. The “Tree-LC packs” are designed to protect, support and celebrate the nominated trees and can include:

  • Tree surveys or professional management advice
  • General upkeep including pruning, fencing, haloing, mulching for root protection and/or removal or management of competing vegetation
  • Interpretive or educational materials, signage or digital information that helps to build support for your tree
  • Community engagement activities to help support and protect your tree

We love this initiative – but with so many beautiful trees in our part of the world, how are we going to choose just one to nominate?

If you’d like to nominate a special tree and help support the fantastic work of the Woodland Trust, get your nominations in by midnight on July 29th – and don’t forget to check back to vote for the shortlist from 19th September to 9th October.
