You may recall that we previously talked about the Woodland Trust’s fantastic Tree of the Year competition. Well, the nominations have been judged and finally a winner has been announced.
The winner is a 150 year old Plane tree in Hackney which came to prominence in the borough of Hackney after the local community realised it was earmarked for removal as part of plans to re-develop the Woodberry Down estate. The group has repeatedly challenged the developer’s decision to frame the issue as a binary choice between housing and the tree, saying that most people in the area want both.
You can read more about winning tree at the Woodland Trust’s website here. There are also winners in Scotland and Wales.
