Published on Wed 30 Apr 2008

There are fewer counterfeit banknotes in circulation than at any time since records began, according to official Bank of England figures. The total face value of fake notes in circulation fell by £1.8 million and the total number of notes by 24% compared to 2006.

In 2006 five people were arrested and subsequently jailed for printing fake notes. The gang is believed to be responsible for almost a quarter of all the fake currency in circulation.
