A roll of paper ready for the presses

Newspapers exceeding green expectations

The news media has come in for a beating in recent weeks with a humiliating apology issued to the McCanns over their treatment in the press and searching questions being asked about the probity of some reporting; but their has been some good news for Fleet Street. Recent figures show that UK newspapers contain an average of 79% recycled paper, well above a voluntary target agreed with the government in 2000.

A spokeswoman for the Confederation of Paper Industries said:

"It is worth noting that the UK newspaper industry is a real recycling success story.
"In 2000, the most recent voluntary agreement was reached with the government in an effort to achieve the following targets: 60% recycled content by the end of 2001, 65% by the end of 2003 and 70% by the end of 2006.
"The industry met, and surpassed, these targets far ahead of schedule."
