Injuries in the Recovered Paper Sector have fallen by 11% on 2006, according to official Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) figures. Major injuries have also fallen by a massive 78%, which works out as only one major injury reported in 2007.
CPI Recovered Paper Sector Manager, Peter Seggie, commented:
"The Sector is encouraged by the improvements displayed to date, but realises it has a long way to go before it achieves the manufacturing industry average. CPI Members have demonstrated a huge commitment and drive for improved health and safety standards, and this is reflected in the progress made so far. The waste industry rightly continues to be the focus of HSE attention, given the incidence rates reported in their statistics."
Unsurprisingly the main cause of accidents seems to be paper and paper based-products as recovered paper sector manager at the CPI, Peter Seggie explains,
"Paper, especially magazine paper, tends to be quite slippery and you also can have hidden dangers, like books hiding under the paper, making it quite easy to turn an ankle."
So the old axiom is true: "A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing".
